Angelina Jolie said she was dissatisfied with Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, the 2001 adaptation of the video game, because she felt its heroine was not developed into a convincing, emotionally rounded person. Her comments matter because the film became one of her most recognisable early roles despite her reservations about its portrayal of Lara Croft.

Jolie said the production was still working out how to translate a video-game character to the screen, leaving Lara as more of a “video vixen” than a substantial woman. Co-star Daniel Craig also criticised the project, saying it began without a finished script and calling it a damaging but instructive career decision.
