Kevin Costner's ambitious Western epic "Horizon: An American Saga" has found a second life as a streaming success on Prime Video, following a rocky theatrical run. The four-part, self-financed franchise was Costner's passion project, one he reportedly left "Yellowstone" to pursue, and had initially been championed by a reinvigorated Warner Bros. keen to back director-driven films after the success of "Oppenheimer" and following a difficult 2021 in which movies such as Clint Eastwood's "Cry Macho" suffered from the studio's day-and-date streaming strategy.

Chapter 1 was released in cinemas in June, but underperformed at the box office, prompting Warner Bros. to shelve the theatrical release of Chapter 2 and pause work on the partially filmed Chapter 3. Despite this setback, the film has reportedly performed strongly on Prime Video, and has been named a favourite recent Western by director Quentin Tarantino, offering the beleaguered franchise a more positive outcome via streaming than it achieved in theatres.
