BBC Joins Working Title’s New TV Adaptation Of ‘Jane Eyre’ Starring Aimee Lou Wood
The BBC has formally joined production company Working Title to develop a new television adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's 1847 novel Jane Eyre, with the broadcaster providing financing and serving as the distributor. Aimee Lou Wood, recently prominent in The White Lotus and Sex Education, will play the title role, whilst Emmy-nominated screenwriter Miriam Battye (known for her work on Succession) has written the adaptation.
The novel, which follows an orphan navigating questions of love, independence, and social standing in 19th-century England, has been adapted to screen multiple times, with Ruth Wilson starring in the BBC's previous major television version in 2006. Wood's involvement reflects her current career momentum, following recent Emmy, SAG, and Golden Globe nominations for The White Lotus Season 3 and concurrent film work including post-production on Anxious People alongside Angelina Jolie. The production comes ahead of the novel's 180th-anniversary milestone in 2027.
