Apple's AirTags carry an IP67 rating, meaning they can withstand certain water exposure but are not truly waterproof, according to a report explaining the limits of the trackers' liquid resistance. As AirTags are commonly attached to items such as keys, bags and pet collars, they are frequently exposed to rain, spills or accidental dunking, making it useful for owners to understand exactly what their devices can and cannot survive.

Under the International Electrotechnical Commission's ingress protection system, the IP67 rating given to AirTags, including the 2026 model, indicates they can be immersed in up to one metre of water for as long as 30 minutes without damage, and are also fully dust-resistant. However, this protection applies only to controlled laboratory conditions with still water, not real-world scenarios such as ocean waves, swimming pools or washing machine cycles, which involve pressure and agitation the rating does not account for. Apple advises rinsing AirTags with tap water after exposure to sugary or acidic liquids, never opening them while wet, and instead drying them with a cloth, removing the battery and letting them air dry before reassembly or replacing the battery if needed.
