Meta has released Muse Glimmer, an open-weight AI model designed to run agents locally on consumer hardware, offering the clearest signal yet of what CEO Mark Zuckerberg means by "personal superintelligence". The launch matters because it shows how Meta plans to distinguish between AI tools it will give away for people to own and run themselves, and more powerful systems it intends to keep under its own control, shaping the wider debate over who benefits from advanced AI.

Glimmer is a 30-billion parameter model, essentially an open version of Meta's stronger closed model, Muse Spark, and is released under the permissive Apache 2.0 licence. It can run multi-step agent tasks such as using tools, writing and debugging code, and handling files, all processed locally on a single consumer GPU rather than in the cloud, which Meta says supports privacy for tasks like managing schedules or drafting messages.
