‘Overwatch’ Season 4 Makes a Controversial Change to Lifeweaver’s Life Grip

Polygon · 4 hours ago

Overwatch's Season 4 update, launched alongside the new tank hero D.Mon, has drawn criticism from fans of the support hero Lifeweaver over changes to his signature Life Grip ability. The change allows players being pulled by Life Grip to cancel it themselves by pressing jump after 0.6 seconds, a move Blizzard says gives allies more agency but which many players fear will undermine the ability's core purpose as a life-saving rescue tool.

Life Grip lets Lifeweaver yank a teammate to safety, and its effectiveness has traditionally relied on the target having no say in the matter, letting a vigilant Lifeweaver snatch a dying ally out of danger before they can react. Critics on the Lifeweaver Mains subreddit argue that panicked players mashing buttons in low-health situations, especially jump, are likely to accidentally cancel life-saving pulls, wasting the cooldown and leaving them exposed. Some have suggested binding the cancel to a less-used key such as crouch, and Blizzard has added an option to disable Life Grip cancellation entirely, though this requires players to actively find and enable the setting.
