On the early morning of August 1st, Gavin Ames was stopped by the DeSoto County Sheriff's Office for driving 110 miles per hour in a 60-mile-per-hour zone. He was arrested and charged under Florida's "super speeder" law, which imposes heightened penalties for significantly exceeding posted speed limits on public roads.

When questioned by the deputy, Ames stated he had been driving at such a dangerous speed in an attempt to reach his girlfriend and catch her engaged in infidelity. Although he provided this justification for his conduct, the officer proceeded with the arrest and enforcement of the state's traffic laws.
