Fake rental listing scams can leave prospective tenants thousands of pounds out of pocket by using genuine property videos and persuasive communication to make nonexistent lets appear credible. The fraud exploits the urgency of finding a home and can turn a routine rental search into a serious financial loss.

In one Southern California case, a renter paid more than $2,500 after a supposed landlord said viewings were unavailable, sent a copied video from an earlier listing and requested a deposit via Zelle. The real homeowner still lived at the property and had never listed it for rent; after the payment, the scammer stopped responding despite promising receipts and a refundable deposit.
