The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s first Proms appearance in more than 20 years, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, offered a highly polished Beethoven Pastoral Symphony followed by a more forceful and colourful performance of Thomas Adès’s Inferno. The reviewer admired the orchestra’s technical refinement and the energy of the Adès, but felt the Beethoven’s sheen occasionally became overly polite and lacking in risk.

Later, the younger Fantasia Orchestra, conducted by Tom Fetherstonhaugh with percussionist Evelyn Glennie, presented a late-night programme themed around listening. Its mixture of show tunes, contemporary works, choral music, solo percussion, Radiohead, Dvořák and Vaughan Williams produced occasional compelling moments, but the reviewer found the playlist-like structure uneven and unfocused.
