OpenAI has begun allowing free and Go-tier ChatGPT users to send unlimited text messages, removing a major restriction for ordinary conversations. However, free accounts still face limits on resource-intensive features, model choice, memory and context, while advertising and default participation in model training remain part of the free service.

Free users can access only the GPT-5.6 Luna model, a single reasoning mode, web search, image generation, a 500MB file Library and voice mode using Live-1 mini. Weekly, undisclosed allowances apply to uploads, image generation, Deep Research, voice, Codex and Work; ads may appear beneath responses, while users can opt out of model training in ChatGPT’s Data Controls.
