Aston Villa teenager Brian Madjo made a striking competitive debut after an eight-month registration dispute, scoring in a 2-1 Uefa Super Cup defeat by Paris St-Germain. The 17-year-old’s performance offered Villa an encouraging new attacking option and could affect their plans to sign another striker before the Premier League season begins.

Villa signed the 6ft 4in forward from Metz for £10m in January but could not register him until winning an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport eight days before the match. Madjo, who has scored four goals in nine England Under-17 appearances, equalised by holding off Willian Pacho and volleying in John McGinn’s cross, after PSG had taken the lead through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia; Desire Doue later scored the winner.
