The Football Association of Ireland has withdrawn its previous support for Fifa president Gianni Infantino, adding to pressure on his attempt to secure a fourth term. The move matters because it reflects growing concern among European football bodies over Fifa’s governance, transparency and consultation following a failed proposal involving its commercial operations.

Uefa, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation accused Infantino of breaking trust through deception in an open letter on Monday. The Welsh FA had already withdrawn support, followed by the FA, while Northern Ireland’s Irish FA has not formally done so but says it supports Uefa’s position; the FAI said its own recent governance challenges strengthened its duty to uphold best practice.
