‘The Wrong Girls’ Writer/Director & Cast On Stoner Comedy’s “L.A. Accent,” Potential For Sequel: “There’s So Much Left There”
Writer-director Dylan Meyer and stars Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat say Los Angeles was essential to the identity of their forthcoming stoner comedy, The Wrong Girls. The film nearly moved to Vancouver, New Orleans or New Jersey, but California’s film and television tax credit enabled production to remain in LA, which the team believes preserves its specific weed culture, local character and humour.
The story follows codependent best friends Frankie and Molly, played by Stewart and Shawkat, who must find rent money within 24 hours after encountering a drug that lets them read minds and communicate telepathically. Meyer developed the idea 14 years ago from her own experiences smoking cannabis with a close friend, while the cast suggested there is enough unexplored material in the characters’ world for a possible sequel.
