Chris Carter, creator of The X-Files, has released a new R-rated director’s cut of 2008 film I Want to Believe on Hulu, saying it more closely reflects his original, more horrific vision. Fox executives had pushed the original release towards a PG-13 rating, limiting its grisly supernatural and body-horror elements; the revised version shifts attention away from Mulder and Scully’s relationship towards the victims’ terror.

Retitled The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn, the cut follows Mulder and Scully investigating kidnappings aided by a priest claiming psychic visions. Carter drew on the work of neurosurgeon Robert J. White, who transplanted a living monkey’s head onto another body in the 1970s, to explore fears around medical experimentation, immortality and the pursuit of younger bodies.
