Liberal Democrat MP Adam Dance has urged the Government and Andy Burnham to consider extending railcard discounts to commuters aged 31 and over. He argues that people lose access to many fare reductions after 30, while regional differences mean existing discounts are unevenly available; the proposal is framed as a way to ease living costs, encourage rail use and support the economy.

Current railcards include discounts for 16-30 year olds, over-60s, veterans and disabled passengers, while the Network Railcard gives one-third off many off-peak fares in London and parts of southern England. Dance said it is unavailable for many journeys within the South West, and IPPR North called for comparable discounts outside the South East; the Department for Transport said it had frozen regulated fares and was pursuing cheaper travel through Great British Railways.
