The X-Men are a team of superheroes from Marvel Comics, first published in the 1960s. Their members are mutants: people born with unusual abilities, who are often feared or discriminated against by the wider public.

Professor X, also known as Charles Xavier, leads a school for young mutants and argues that humans and mutants can live together. Cyclops, Jean Grey, Rogue and Storm are among the best-known members, while Magneto is a powerful mutant whose approach to protecting mutants often brings him into conflict with the X-Men.

Previous X-Men films were made by 20th Century Fox, before Disney acquired the company and its Marvel characters. Bringing the group into the Marvel Cinematic Universe allows Marvel Studios to establish new versions of the characters alongside its existing film and television franchises.
