A New Jersey grandfather has been charged after allegedly crashing his boat while intoxicated, killing his two young grandchildren in Barnegat Bay. Prosecutors say the case involves reckless vessel homicide and highlights the potentially fatal consequences of operating a boat after drinking.

Stephen Schneider, 64, was arrested on 15 August, nearly a month after the 19 July crash. Police allege that, during a 9pm trip, he was driving a 30-foot boat when it hit a channel marker near his waterfront home; nine-year-old Mya Golabek and her seven-year-old brother Sigmund were thrown into the water and later died. The children were their parents’ only children.
