Shakira Leads Million-Dollar Push to Rebuild Schools Following Colombia Earthquake
Shakira has launched a million-dollar fundraising effort to rebuild schools in Colombia's Chocó region after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the country on 10 August 2026. Visiting the city of Quibdó, the singer announced an initial commitment of $1.25 million and pledged to personally oversee the reconstruction of the damaged Technological University of Chocó, urging governments, foundations and businesses to keep supporting recovery efforts once initial media attention fades.
The $1.25 million package comprises $500,000 from Shakira and Live Nation, $500,000 from the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, and $250,000 from the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, with Shakira's Fundación Pies Descalzos coordinating the rebuild alongside local authorities. Philanthropist Howard G. Buffett, who joined her in Quibdó, separately committed funding to rebuild ten further schools in Chocó's rural areas, adding to nearly 200 schools already reported damaged. According to Colombia's National Unit for Disaster Risk Management, the earthquake has killed 287 people, injured 4,147 and left 194 missing.
