Work on £1.5m nature reserve to start next month
A charity in Hungerford is set to begin work next month on a £1.5m nature reserve, transforming poor-quality, unmanaged meadows into a dedicated wildlife haven. The Kennet Valley Wetland Reserve is being led by the Town and Manor of Hungerford, the group behind the town's Tutti Day celebrations, and has reportedly received strong backing from the local community.
The reserve will cover around 16 hectares (40 acres) at Undy's Meadow on the northern edge of the town, near the River Kennet, and aims to attract species such as willow warblers, grasshopper warblers and wetland birds. Construction is restricted to between September and December, avoiding the bird nesting season beforehand and overly wet ground afterwards. The first phase, including landscaping, paths and boardwalks, is expected to be completed by next summer.
