Phyllida Law, Actress and Mother of Sophie and Emma Thompson, Dies at 94
Phyllida Law, the Scottish stage and screen actress and mother of actresses Emma and Sophie Thompson, has died at home at the age of 94. Her manager, Jacky Leggo, said she "died supremely peacefully at home, surrounded by all her family." Law built a long career across theatre, television and film, often working alongside her daughters, and was recognised with an OBE in 2014 for services to drama and charitable causes.
Born in Glasgow on 8 May 1932, Law trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and appeared in numerous stage productions, including works by Alan Bennett and Somerset Maugham. She featured with Emma Thompson in films such as Peter's Friends (1992) and Much Ado About Nothing (1993), and with Sophie Thompson in Emma (1996), while solo credits included The Time Machine, Miss Potter and Albert Nobbs. She was married to actor Eric Thompson until his death in 1982 and is survived by her daughters and four grandchildren.
