Variety · 4 hours ago

Phyllida Law, the Scottish actress and mother of Emma and Sophie Thompson, has died at the age of 94. Her manager confirmed she died "supremely peacefully" at home on 27 July, surrounded by her family, while her granddaughter paid tribute to her on social media. Law enjoyed a career spanning more than five decades on stage and screen, and was particularly noted for the numerous productions in which she appeared alongside her daughters.

Born in Glasgow in 1932, Law trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School before going on to appear in works including the 1996 film adaptation of "Emma" and Kenneth Branagh's "Much Ado About Nothing" and "Peter's Friends", as well as "Nanny McPhee" and Alan Rickman's "The Winter Guest" alongside Emma Thompson. She also had a long West End career, including in the original London cast of "La Cage Aux Folles", and received an OBE in 2014 for services to drama and charity. She was married to actor Eric Thompson, co-creator of "The Magic Roundabout", until his death in 1982, and is survived by her two daughters and three grandchildren.
