Husband and mother-in-law charged over Indian bride’s death

BBC World · 3 hours ago

India's federal police, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), have charged the husband and mother-in-law of Twisha Sharma, a 33-year-old model and actor, with "abetment to suicide" and "cruelty" following her death in May. Twisha was found dead at her marital home in Bhopal just five months after marrying, and the case has attracted intense media attention in India, partly because her mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, is a retired judge and her husband, Samarth Singh, is a lawyer. Both deny the allegations, with Twisha's family alleging murder over dowry demands while the in-laws maintain she died by suicide amid mental health issues.

According to the CBI's 600-page chargesheet, Twisha met Samarth through a dating app in February 2025 and married him in December, before allegedly suffering ongoing mental cruelty and derogatory treatment from her husband, allegedly encouraged by his mother. Twisha's family say tensions escalated in April after she became pregnant, claiming her in-laws accused her of carrying another man's child and forced her to undergo an abortion in early May; Giribala disputes this account. Samarth surrendered to police after initially being unlocated, while Giribala was arrested shortly afterwards, and both remain in custody. The CBI has also asked the court for permission to continue investigating, raising the possibility that further evidence could implicate additional people.
