Wrexham’s Moore aiming to stay the distance

BBC Sport · 2 hours ago

Wrexham striker Kieffer Moore scored the club's opening goal of the new Championship season, less than three minutes into Monday's 1-1 draw with Cardiff City, before Rubin Colwill's late equaliser denied the club victory in the Welsh derby. The 34-year-old says he has taken extra measures over the summer to avoid a repeat of the fitness problems that disrupted his first season at the Racecourse, insisting he wants to sustain the strong early form he showed last year without being derailed by injury.

Moore made a big impact after joining from Sheffield United last summer, scoring 12 goals by 26 December as Wrexham pushed for promotion, but a hamstring injury and other issues limited him to just one more goal for the rest of the campaign, which ended in a 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough. Injury also ruled him out of Wales' World Cup play-off defeat by Bosnia-Herzegovina on penalties. Over the summer he invested in extra recovery measures and private training sessions, and manager Phil Parkinson will be hoping this pays off given Moore's importance as Wrexham's leading striker.

Wrexham are a Welsh football club playing in the Championship, English football's second tier, after a rapid rise from the lower leagues in recent years. Kieffer Moore, a 34-year-old striker who also plays for Wales, joined the club last summer from Sheffield United and quickly became an important goalscorer as Wrexham chased promotion.

Moore's first season at Wrexham was disrupted by injury problems, most notably a hamstring issue, which limited his effectiveness in the second half of the campaign and also kept him out of a World Cup play-off match for Wales. Ahead of the new season, he has spoken about changes he has made over the summer, including additional recovery work and private training, aimed at avoiding a repeat of those fitness setbacks. Manager Phil Parkinson relies heavily on Moore as the team's leading forward.
