Frank Sinatra Turned Down What Became One of Willie Nelson’s Biggest Duets

American Songwriter · 2 hours ago

Willie Nelson's 1983 hit duet "To All The Girls I've Loved Before," recorded with Julio Iglesias, was originally written by Albert Hammond and Hal David for Frank Sinatra, who turned it down. The song went on to become one of Nelson's most successful recordings, topping the country charts and reaching the pop Top 5, despite never being intended for either performer who ultimately made it famous.

Hammond first released the song himself, but it had little radio success before Iglesias and Nelson's version became a two-week US country No. 1 and reached the Top 5 on Billboard's Hot 100. Nelson has said he was drawn to the collaboration after hearing Iglesias on the radio in London with his wife, Connie Koepke, and later approached Iglesias, who was recording the track for his album 1100 Bel Air Place, produced by Hammond. Although Sinatra passed on the song, he and Nelson later recorded together, duetting on "A Foggy Day (In London Town)" for Sinatra's 1994 album Duets II, with a version of "My Way" following in 2005.

  • Sinatra rejected the song later made famous by Nelson and Iglesias.
  • Their 1983 duet topped country charts, hit Hot 100's Top 5.
  • Nelson and Sinatra later recorded together despite the earlier rejection.
