Comcast gives its Wi-Fi motion detector a security makeover

The Register · 3 hours ago

Comcast has rebranded and expanded its Wi-Fi-based intruder detection feature, folding the WiFi Motion tool it launched in 2025 into a new bundle called Xfinity Shield, which also includes cybersecurity protections built into the Xfinity Gateway router. The technology uses radio frequency changes between the Xfinity Gateway and connected devices to detect unexpected movement in the home, sending alerts via the Xfinity app without recording video or images. Comcast stops short of calling it a home security service, since it is not overseen by a dedicated security provider.

The feature relies on stationary devices such as the gateway, Wi-Fi extenders, thermostats or speakers, and users can tune sensitivity levels or exclude animals under roughly 18kg (though this may also miss small children). Comcast insists the system cannot identify individuals or track precise movements and does not monitor the notifications it generates. However, the small print accompanying both the 2025 launch and this rebrand states that Comcast may share data generated by the service with unspecified third parties in connection with law enforcement investigations, legal disputes, or court orders, without further notice to the customer.
