‘California Schemin” Trailer: Two Scottish Rappers Con Their Way to a Record Deal in James McAvoy’s Directorial Debut (Exclusive)
The trailer has been released for "California Schemin'", the feature directorial debut of Scottish actor James McAvoy, with The Hollywood Reporter given an exclusive premiere. Set in the early 2000s, the film dramatises the real-life story of Scottish rappers Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd, who posed as Californians to talk their way into a US hip-hop record deal, a scheme previously chronicled in Bain's memoir and the 2013 documentary "The Great Hip Hop Hoax".
The film stars Séamus McLean Ross and Samuel Bottomley as the duo, with McAvoy also appearing as a record label boss taken in by their ruse, alongside Lucy Halliday and Rebekah Murrell. It is produced by Bob Yari's Magenta Light Studios, written by Elaine Gracie and Archie Thomson, and marks a milestone for McAvoy after three decades as an actor; he said the project let him tell a story rooted in his own working-class Scottish background. Having premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival to a positive review from THR, "California Schemin'" is scheduled for cinema release on 9 October 2026.
