Dutch Kids TV Classic ‘De Fabeltjeskrant’ Getting International Revival

Deadline · 3 hours ago

Robin de Levita Productions, the Tony Award-winning Dutch producer, is leading an international revival of De Fabeltjeskrant, the beloved Dutch children's puppet show set in the "Great Animal Forest". The project combines a full restoration of the original series with development of a new CGI version, aiming to reintroduce a much-loved franchise to the generation who grew up with it while building a fresh fanbase among today's children.

Around 1,600 episodes of the original 1968 show, created by Leen Valkenier and centred on newspaper-reading owl Meneer de Uil, are being restored from preserved 16mm film by the Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision, Monks and JVDB Studios, with releases planned for the show's YouTube channel. De Fabeltjeskrant was previously sold to 40 countries, and producers say the restoration reflects growing industry interest in established, multigenerational family IP made newly accessible via streaming platforms. The CGI reboot, also produced with Monks, will reimagine the forest and its characters using current animation technology while retaining the original's core themes of friendship and community; it will be pitched to buyers at the MIPCOM market in October.
