‘Lucky’ Creators on Deciding Who Dies in the Finale, Why the Show Really Is Over and Not Knowing About Drew Starkey’s ‘Avid’ Fandom ‘Until We Killed Him’

The finale of Apple TV's con-artist drama "Lucky" saw title character Luciana "Lucky" Armstrong (Anya Taylor-Joy) orchestrate one last scheme against gangster Wayne Whittaker (William Fichtner) to secure freedom for herself and her father, John (Timothy Olyphant). The episode resolved the show's central mysteries, including the revelation that Whittaker had colluded with a corrupt FBI agent to track down Lucky's late husband Cary (Drew Starkey), directly causing his fatal crash, before violence erupted between the show's key players. Creators Jonathan Tropper and Cassie Pappas spoke to Variety about the choices behind the finale's deaths and confirmed the series will not continue.

In the climactic confrontation, mother-in-law and underboss Priscilla Masterson (Annette Bening) shoots Whittaker dead in revenge for her son Cary's death, then lets Lucky and John go free out of sympathy. Lucky ultimately outwits her own father, tricking him into believing he holds the key to $10 million in stolen cryptocurrency before revealing she has handed the money and evidence to FBI agent Billie Rand (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor), securing her own clean break. The creators also discussed having only learned of Drew Starkey's passionate fanbase after killing off his character earlier in the season, and both have since moved to other Apple TV projects, with Tropper now producing the third season of "Your Friends & Neighbors."
