Charter Closes Acquisition Of Rival Cox, Expanding Spectrum Pay-TV And Broadband To 45 States
Charter Communications has finalised its acquisition of Cox Enterprises in a $34.5 billion transaction that creates a major cable, broadband and wireless services provider. The combined entity serves 38 million subscribers, with the Spectrum brand expanding to 45 states beginning in September, and includes Charter's simultaneous acquisition of Liberty Broadband assets previously held by investor John Malone.
Charter's leadership positioned the merger as a necessary consolidation to strengthen competitive standing against national and global connectivity providers, citing YouTube and Starlink as key competitors. CEO Chris Winfrey characterised the expanded company as better positioned to invest and innovate whilst competing with these larger rivals, with regulatory and shareholder approval having been granted earlier in the year.
