NEIL PEART Documentary Maker Hopes Film Will Reveal Iconic RUSH Drummer Was ‘A Very Loyal And Loving Friend’

A new documentary titled "Neil Peart: No One's Disciple" will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on 16 September 2026, with a public screening set for 19 September and a broadcast on Canada's CBC network on 23 September. Directed by Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn, who previously made the 2010 RUSH documentary "Beyond The Lighted Stage", the 96-minute film aims to show the late RUSH drummer not just as a celebrated musician and lyricist but as, in Dunn's words, "a very loyal and loving friend" who was otherwise quite guarded about his personal life.

The film traces Peart's difficult early career through to his rise to fame, drawing on interviews with RUSH bandmates Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson as well as friends and fellow musicians. It also features new live performances of RUSH songs, with drummers Chad Smith, Stewart Copeland, Danny Carey and Gavin Harrison each taking a turn behind the kit in tribute to Peart. Peart died in January 2020, aged 67, after a three-year private battle with brain cancer that he deliberately kept secret from fans, a decision Lee has since said forced him and Lifeson to be "dishonest" publicly in order to protect the family's privacy.
