‘Tribeca 25’ Doc Trailer Highlights Post-9/11 Origins of Festival: “Devastation Downtown” (Exclusive)
Tribeca Studios has announced that "Tribeca 25," a documentary about the post-9/11 origins of the Tribeca Film Festival, will debut on Netflix on 11 September 2026. Directed by Matt Tyrnauer, the film traces how festival co-founders Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal launched the event as a civic response to the September 2001 terrorist attacks, aiming to revitalise downtown Manhattan, and follows its growth into a major cultural institution over 25 editions. The exclusive trailer, released ahead of the anniversary broadcast, features De Niro recalling the destruction of the World Trade Center and Rosenthal describing their desire to "fight back" through art.
The documentary includes new interviews with De Niro, Rosenthal, and festival alumni Jon M. Chu and Nia DaCosta, alongside archival footage and reflections from figures including Martin Scorsese, Whoopi Goldberg, Bruce Springsteen, Nas, Bono, Denis Leary and others. It revisits the first festival in 2002, a five-day event screening 150 films, and explores broader themes of resilience, community and the role of cities and storytelling in recovery. Tyrnauer described it as "a love letter to New York and to the movies," while Rosenthal said the festival's founding idea remains unchanged 25 years on.
