‘We Know What We Want’: With a New Recording Studio and Label Deal, DMA’S Are Just Getting Started

Billboard · 3 hours ago

DMA'S, an Australian alternative rock trio, has released their self-titled fifth album following a decade of commercial success without achieving a number-one record. With previous albums peaking at No. 2 in Australia and No. 3 in the UK, the band signed their first major label deal with Sony Music and Wonderlick, accompanying an album recorded entirely at their own Sydney studio—a historic venue previously owned by Col Joye and used by artists including David Bowie and Bruce Springsteen. The band acquired the studio through Facebook Marketplace and have since produced recordings for other artists.

The album emerged from a year-long production process conducted largely in-house by the band members, with occasional contributions from collaborators including Grammy-nominated producer Styalz Fuego. Lead guitarist Matt Mason described the extended timeline as a luxury that allowed unlimited experimentation, contrasting with their previous work where they wished for additional recording days. The self-produced approach solidified the band's vision after attempting to work with an overseas producer, resulting in an album the members describe as their favourite to date.
