Canada’s H264 Nabs Colombia’s ‘Where the River Begins’ Ahead of Toronto Fest World Premiere

Variety · 3 hours ago

Canadian sales and distribution company h264 has acquired worldwide sales rights to "Where the River Begins" ("Donde comienza el río"), the new film from Colombian-Canadian director Juan Andrés Arango, ahead of its world premiere in the Centrepiece section of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The deal underscores growing international interest in Latin American cinema and gives Arango, whose 2012 debut "La Playa DC" represented Colombia at the Oscars, a high-profile launch pad for his latest work at one of the world's leading festivals.

The film follows Yajaira, a young Embera woman living with her daughter in a rough Bogotá neighbourhood who is haunted by memories of the jungle village she left behind; after a tragedy, the pair flee towards the Andágueda River accompanied by a young gang member with a hidden secret. Starring Girleza Duave Cerezo, Juan David Junca Linares and Ana Michell Nama Dumaza, the Canadian-Colombian co-production (made with Norway) was shot across Bogotá, Medellín and Honda, and produced by Annick Blanc and Maria Gracia Turgeon of Midi La Nuit alongside Paola Andrea Pérez Nieto of Inercia Películas. TIFF's 51st edition runs from 10 to 20 September 2026.
