Jaafar Jackson says ‘Michael 2’ will show child abuse scandal from Michael Jackson’s “point of view”

NME · 3 hours ago

Michael actor Jaafar Jackson has said its upcoming sequel will portray the child sexual abuse allegations against Michael Jackson from the late singer's own "point of view". Speaking to GQ, Jackson, who plays his uncle as an adult in the biopic, said the family felt Michael's own voice had been missing from how the allegations were previously told, calling existing accounts "someone else's story" driven by "an agenda". The comments matter because the first film, now the highest-grossing biopic ever, deliberately avoided the scandal after a settlement clause blocked one accuser's portrayal, so the sequel's approach will be closely watched.

The original Michael, which has taken more than $1billion (£731million), covered Jackson's life from childhood to the late-1980s "Bad" tour, with reshoots reportedly costing $15million (£10.9million) after the accuser dispute. Allegations against Jackson include a 1993 accusation from Evan Chandler over his son Jordan, settled financially in 1994, plus later lawsuits from Wade Robson and James Safechuck; the Jackson estate denies all claims. The sequel, still in development, is scheduled to begin filming later this year, with release targeted for late 2027 or early 2028.
