You Can Now Try the Best Silksong Competitor for Free

Polygon · 3 hours ago

A free Steam demo for Chronoscript: The Endless End launched on 20 August, giving players an early look at a hand-drawn, Metroidvania-style action-adventure ahead of its full release in autumn 2026. The game has drawn comparisons to Hollow Knight: Silksong thanks to its exploration-based combat, and it stands out for its striking visual style, notable creative pedigree and unusual premise, making the free trial a strong reason for genre fans to take notice now rather than waiting for launch.

Developed by Japanese studio DeskWorks Inc. and published by Shueisha Games, the game casts players as Frederick G. Muller, an editor trapped inside a manuscript by Viola S. Chambers, a vampire author who has been writing her book for 1,000 years. Its hand-inked visuals come from character designer Mari Shimazaki (Bayonetta, Okami), while the score is composed by Yasunori Mitsuda, known for Chrono Trigger, Xenogears and Xenoblade. The game blends 2D, frame-by-frame illustrated environments with a 3D framing device showing Viola at her writing desk, an approach Polygon's hands-on preview described as surprisingly cohesive rather than clashing.
