Sir Anthony Hopkins often ‘returns’ to Wales on Google Maps
Sir Anthony Hopkins has revealed that he mentally "returns" to Wales almost every day, often by browsing his old neighbourhood on Google Maps' street photographs. The 88-year-old Port Talbot-born actor, speaking to ITV Wales from his Los Angeles home, said he now feels too old to physically walk the streets of Margam again, so uses the app to revisit them instead. His comments highlight how strongly his Welsh upbringing continues to shape his sense of identity, even decades after achieving Hollywood stardom.
The Oscar-winner, nominated six times and a two-time winner including for Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs, was speaking to promote his first album, inspired by childhood memories. He described writing music since the age of four and recalled vivid recollections, such as eating lemon curd sandwiches on Bracken Road. Hopkins said his identity was rooted in "the land of hiraeth", Welsh choral traditions and Cardiff Arms Park rugby internationals, and that his Hollywood dreams began at Port Talbot's Plaza Cinema after the Second World War.
