Corruption charges dropped against South Africa’s police intelligence boss

BBC World · 3 hours ago

South African prosecutors have withdrawn fraud and corruption charges against Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo, head of the police's crime intelligence unit, along with six fellow officers, following a review by the country's chief prosecutor. Khumalo and his colleagues had been arrested in June 2025 over the allegedly unlawful appointment of a civilian, Dineo Mokwele, to a senior technical support role within the unit, but they denied wrongdoing and were never suspended. The case's collapse is notable given South Africa's police force has long faced accusations of political interference and corruption, with a major judicial inquiry, the Madlanga Commission, currently examining related claims.

Prosecutors had alleged Mokwele was unqualified and labelled her a "token appointment", but the Madlanga Commission heard she held around a dozen relevant certificates and was in fact well qualified for the post. Andrea Johnson, former head of a specialist corruption unit within the National Prosecuting Authority, later admitted before the commission that she had been unaware of Mokwele's qualifications and apologised for remarks made about her. Speaking outside court in Pretoria, Khumalo, who has led crime intelligence since 2022 after more than two decades in various police roles, said he was relieved the "truth at least is out".
