Leandro Paredes receives 10-match ban as Argentina punished for World Cup final brawl

The Guardian · 4 hours ago

Fifa's disciplinary committee has banned three Argentina players over a brawl at the end of last month's World Cup final against Spain, though it only issued fines over a controversial Falkland Islands banner displayed after Argentina's semi-final win over England. Leandro Paredes received the heaviest punishment, a 10-match ban, for his role in the post-match melee, while Spain's Gavi was also sanctioned, highlighting that discipline extended to both sides of the ugly scenes that marred the final.

Paredes was fined $90,000 alongside his ban, with Nahuel Molina given a seven-match suspension and the same fine; Thiago Almada and Argentina coaching staff member Roberto Ayala received one and three-match bans respectively, each fined $30,000, and Gavi got a one-match ban and $30,000 fine. Separately, the Argentinian FA was fined $321,000 over the "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" banner and other discriminatory conduct by fans, with the country's next home match ordered to be played at 50% capacity and a further capacity restriction suspended; $100,000 of the fine was also suspended. The banner had drawn condemnation from UK politicians, including Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey, echoing Uefa's earlier ban of Spain's Rodri and Álvaro Morata over Gibraltar chants.
