Waymo hands over documents in NHTSA’s child collision probe

TechCrunch · 3 hours ago

Waymo has submitted documents to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as part of the agency's investigation into a January collision in which one of its robotaxis struck a nine-year-old girl near a school in Santa Monica, California. The move suggests the probe is progressing, though the documents made public so far have been entirely redacted on grounds of "confidential business information," limiting what can be learned from them at this stage.

The crash occurred on 23 January when a Waymo Jaguar I-Pace, travelling at 17mph, braked to 6mph before hitting the child, who fell but suffered only minor injuries and did not require medical transport, according to a preliminary National Transportation Safety Board report. NHTSA opened its own separate investigation a week after the incident and sent Waymo 12 questions in March covering school-zone speed limits, prior complaints and its software, with an original response deadline of 8 May; Waymo requested more time, and the firm has now told TechCrunch it has completed its submissions after further correspondence in May and July.
