Bolt registers to play for Manchester Sunday league team

BBC Sport · 3 hours ago

Olympic sprint legend Usain Bolt has registered to play for Wythenshawe Vets FC, a veterans' Sunday league team in south Manchester, according to the Football Association's Full-Time website. The 40-year-old Jamaican, an eight-time Olympic champion and holder of the 100m and 200m world records, would join a squad already stacked with former Premier League professionals, making this an unusually high-profile addition to grassroots amateur football.

Wythenshawe, who compete in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans Football League for players over 35, gained attention last year for recruiting ex-pros including Emile Heskey, Antonio Valencia, Papiss Cisse, Oumar Niasse, Stephen Ireland, Nedum Onuoha, Joleon Lescott and Danny Drinkwater. Bolt, who retired from athletics in 2017 and briefly pursued football with Australia's Central Coast Mariners in 2018 before leaving after eight weeks, has not been officially confirmed by the club, which has been contacted for comment.
