A 16-Year-Old Canon DSLR Now Runs Doom, Somehow

Polygon · 3 hours ago

A developer known as lauris-nl has built a working port of the classic 1993 game Doom for the Canon EOS 550D (also sold as the Rebel T2i), an entry-level DSLR released in 2010. The project uses Magic Lantern, open-source firmware originally designed to unlock extra photography features on Canon cameras, repurposed here to run the demon-slaying shooter instead. It highlights a long-running hobbyist trend of squeezing Doom onto unlikely old hardware, and shows how flexible tinkering with camera firmware can be.

The port maps the camera's directional pad to movement, the Set button to firing, and the Menu and Display buttons to the in-game menu, while the built-in speaker plays the game's sound effects. It only works on the 550D running firmware version 1.0.9, and the developer warns against trying it on other models or firmware versions due to the risk of damaging the device. A separate developer, DaneBentley, has achieved a similar feat on the 2007 Canon PowerShot SD1000, and Magic Lantern is also used more conventionally to add features like enhanced video recording and focus peaking.

  • Developer ported Doom to a 2010 Canon EOS 550D DSLR via Magic Lantern firmware
  • Camera's buttons and speaker fully handle controls and sound
  • Only works on 550D with firmware 1.0.9; other models risk being bricked
