Hill stars for Yorks on day two against Hants
George Hill took five wickets to help Yorkshire hold the upper hand against relegation rivals Hampshire on day two of their County Championship Division One match at the Utilita Bowl. Yorkshire, already under pressure in the promotion battle, secured a slender first-innings lead before Adam Lyth's fifty helped extend their advantage, though a late flurry of wickets kept the contest finely balanced heading into day three.
Hampshire were bowled out for 197, giving Yorkshire a 24-run first-innings lead after they had made 173, with Hill finishing with figures of 5-29 for his second five-wicket haul of the season against Hampshire and seventh of his career. Tom Prest (46) and Nick Gubbins had earlier dug in with a patient stand before both fell, while Lyth followed his bowling contribution of a 50th first-class wicket with a rapid 51 as Yorkshire pushed their lead to 111. However, five wickets fell late on, including Lyth's, leaving the match delicately poised at 135-5, with doubts also hanging over wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow after a finger injury.
