Plug-in solar: could a low-cost panel cut your bills?
From 27 August, Britons will be able to buy low-cost "plug-in" solar panels, also known as "balcony" or "plug-and-play" solar, without needing an electrician to install them. A change to wiring regulations means households in Great Britain can now connect these small solar kits directly into a wall socket, opening up solar power to renters and flat-dwellers who could not previously fit rooftop panels.
The kits, common in Germany and Spain but previously barred in Britain, typically include one or two panels that can be fixed to a balcony, shed roof or garden wall, generating up to 800 watts of power. Retailers including B&Q, Currys, Lidl, Wickes and Amazon are preparing to sell them, with UK brand UKSOL offering 460W and 890W kits from £599 and £999 respectively; the safety charity Electrical Safety First is urging buyers to purchase from reputable retailers rather than third-party online marketplace sellers once the rules take effect.
