Syria says Israeli strike near Damascus violation of international law

BBC World · 5 hours ago

Syria has condemned an Israeli air strike on the village of Beit Jinn, southwest of Damascus, which hit a civilian vehicle and injured several people. It is the second Israeli strike inside Syria in a week, with Damascus calling it a violation of its sovereignty and international law, while Israel's military said it had targeted a "terrorist" preparing an imminent attack on its soldiers.

The strike follows an earlier Israeli attack on the Abu al-Duhur airbase near the Turkish border, which prompted a rare rebuke from Washington over an "unnecessary escalation". Israeli officials said that attack was linked to concerns over Turkish troops potentially deploying at the base, a claim Ankara rejected, while US ambassador Tom Barrack suggested Israel may have been trying to provoke Turkey ahead of Israeli elections, drawing a sharp rebuttal from Israeli defence minister Israel Katz. The tensions come as Israel continues to occupy territory it seized in southwest Syria after Bashar al-Assad's fall in 2024, even as Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa has moved closer to the West, including a November 2025 visit to the White House.
