Trump attacks Canada after trade talks collapse amid tariffs

The Guardian · 3 hours ago

Donald Trump has hit back at Canada after trade negotiations collapsed in Washington on Friday, plunging the two countries into a fresh trade war. In his first public comments since talks broke down, Trump accused Canada of wanting "the benefits of being a State, without being one" and vowed "No more!!!" over tariffs he says Canada has long imposed on US farmers. The dispute matters because it deepens tensions between the two neighbouring economies and threatens the wider North American trade relationship built up over decades.

The breakdown came after the US imposed 50% tariffs on $20bn (£14.6bn) worth of Canadian goods, covering items from hockey sticks to tongue depressors, which took effect on Saturday. Canadian prime minister Mark Carney said the country was "at war" over trade, accusing Trump of "attacking" Canada and pledging to match the tariffs "dollar for dollar" from 8 September, targeting steel, dairy, appliances and electronics. The escalation also casts doubt over the future of the USMCA trade pact between the US, Canada and Mexico, worth about $2tn annually, after Trump refused to renew it this summer despite requests from Canada and Mexico.
