A record 17% of American adults now say they smoke marijuana, according to Gallup's latest Consumption Habits poll, even as public opinion on the drug remains almost evenly divided. The figure marks a return to the previous high set in 2023 and represents more than double the seven percent recorded when Gallup began tracking the measure in 2013, pointing to a marked long-term shift in American attitudes and behaviour around cannabis.

Marijuana use dipped to 13% in 2024 before climbing back to 14% in 2025 and rising a further three points this year. The increase has coincided with a decline in alcohol consumption, which fell to an all-time low of 54% in 2025 and remained there in 2026, down from 67% in 2022. Use is most common among under-50s, lower earners and those without a college degree, while opinion on the drug's effects is split almost down the middle, with 47% viewing it positively and 46% negatively.
