A barman in Dundee has been jailed for two years after admitting he stole £50,000 from his frail, stroke-affected father over three years, impersonating him to set up online banking and access his pension. Sheriff George Way condemned Stephan Dewar, 31, as "despicable" for breaching his duty to care for his vulnerable father, noting there was no mitigating explanation such as addiction or coercion, and that the money was simply squandered on drink and entertainment.

The fraud began after Dewar persuaded his housebound father, Andrew Dewar, 67, to lend him £5,000 towards buying a pub, then used the bank details he was given to secretly register for online banking in his father's name. Between May 2019 and April 2022 he made repeated transfers totalling £50,000, spending the cash at a Dundee bar, on small gambling bets, 18 payments to OnlyFans, and everyday purchases including Greggs. The theft came to light when his uncle, who held power of attorney for his father, spotted unexplained withdrawals, and bank phone recordings confirmed Dewar had posed as his father.
