A five-year-old girl in Garland, Texas, died after being left in a hot car outside her family's home for around four hours during an extreme heat warning, police have said. Faustina Jean-Paul was found unresponsive shortly after 8pm on Tuesday, having been picked up from school along with her older brother earlier that afternoon, but only two people got out of the car when it arrived home. No charges have been filed and an investigation is ongoing, with the medical examiner yet to determine a cause of death.

Police say the siblings were collected from school around 3.30pm and reached home between 4pm and 4.30pm, with Faustina left alone inside the locked vehicle with its windows shut. In 100F heat, temperatures inside a car can climb to nearly 120F within ten minutes and up to 140F within an hour. Family members searched the property before finding her still inside and performed CPR until paramedics arrived, though she could not be saved. The school district, where Faustina had only recently enrolled, confirmed her death and offered crisis counselling, while a GoFundMe has been set up to help her family with funeral costs, with a service scheduled for 5 September.
