Daily Mail · 3 hours ago

A former soldier has appeared in court charged with manslaughter after allegedly attacking an elderly couple with a metal pole during a burglary at their home in Finsbury Park, north London. Rose Smith, 75, died in hospital the day after the attack, while her husband Ronald Smith, 81, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and later discharged. The case has drawn attention to a violent home invasion in which four men reportedly forced their way into the couple's house demanding cash while they were watching television.

Jeffrey Dean Rose, 46, of North Harrow, has been charged with manslaughter, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and aggravated burglary with intent, and was remanded in custody at Barkingside Magistrates' Court to appear at the Old Bailey on 22 September. The court heard Rose previously worked as a private investigator before serving as a soldier, leaving the Army due to the coronavirus pandemic and later working as a bin man. Mrs Smith's family described her as a "wonderful, outgoing woman" who loved bingo and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild, and are being supported by specialist police officers.
