Sydney Harbour Tunnel closed due to car fire causing traffic delays

Daily Mail · 3 hours ago

A car fire has forced the closure of the Sydney Harbour Tunnel in both directions, causing significant traffic disruption during Wednesday morning peak hours. The blaze triggered the tunnel's automatic sprinkler system and prompted a substantial emergency response, with delays spreading across major routes including the Gore Hill Freeway and M1 motorway.

At least 12 firefighters and three fire trucks attended the scene to bring the fire under control, while paramedics assessed one person for smoke inhalation. Traffic queues backed up past Mosman and Artarmon, with Transport for NSW advising motorists to seek diversions, plan ahead and allow extra travel time. Light vehicles have been directed to use the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Cahill Expressway as an alternative, though heavy vehicles must find other routes as neither can be used through the tunnel closure.
